Review:
Blaudzun is Johannes Sigmond from the Netherlands who named himself after the not very well known Danish 70’s cyclist Verner Baludzun. He debuted with a typical sentimental singer-songwriter album, Blaudzun, that sounds like Bon Iver without the double tracked vocals, and had superb production and a decent vocal performance by Sigmond. Seadrift Soundmachine had even better atmospheres, though the strings take away from some of the better duet moments.
Heavy Flowers is another noticeable step forward from Seadrift Soundmachine. Heavy Flowers sounds fuller and perhaps a bit more light-spirited than Seadrift Sound Machine. Also, on the whole, the pace of the music is slightly higher on the new record, but without losing any of the emotional impact of its two predecessors. Blaudzun’s music is still extremely moody, given a dose of intensity by his pathos-filled voice.
The quiver in Sigmond’s vocals on “Flame on My Head” may not be unique but it is played well. “Another Ghost Heart” is a nice acoustic march through a contemporary singer-songwriter’s story. Blaudzun has added some flavoring to his music, but the essence is still the same. Opening song Flame On My Head sets the tone with swelling strings, percussion and vocals full of restless melancholy. At times Blaudzun sound is like dark alt-country. In other instances we are treated to great pop music that echoes Bowie in his glam rock years, but also sounds like Arcade Fire or Radiohead.
Heavy Flowers contains some grand songs that demand attention because of their intriguing instrumentation and arrangements and tormented vocals. The total dedication with which the songs are recorded is audible all through the album. Blaudzun already had one great record to his name, but this new album is without a doubt as good.
